Frequently Asked Questions

What about socialization?

As a homeschooler, I get this one a LOT! In our family we are not very concerned about this issue. Our children have tons of friends as well as a weekly playgroup, monthly field trips, ballet, baseball, and clogging. Its really a non-issue around here. Here are a few links if you are interested in finding out more about homeschool and socialization.

Social Development or Socialization?

What is "self-directed learning?"

Basically "self-directed" is a nicer way of saying "unschooling." The basic premise of either is non-coercive education. My education philosophy is based on free agency and trust. There is no "school at home" around here. Everything is hands on learning from daily life, fun projects based on the child's interests, and activities based on the same interests. We use a variety of mediums to expose our children to a plethora of learning options, and as they show interest we build on that interest.

I'm interested in homeschooling. Where do I start?

Homeschool Utah
Every home a school? Of course! Parents are the first, the most effective, and the most connected teachers of their children. Learning is a natural part of family life. Actually, there is no such thing as "home-school" any more than there is "home-eat" or "home-sleep." Home is the default setting; leaving home is the exception. Parents cannot escape the responsibility -- or the joy -- of teaching. Happy are the children whose parents are purposeful in this duty, who make their home a center of learning for themselves and their children. These parents may sometimes employ outside tutors or classes; but always, the office is at home. And every home is a school.
